Overview

Where a couple is married or in a civil partnership and using donor gametes, the relationship status determines legal parenthood, so it must be confirmed and evidenced. Fertility Consent lets the patient upload their marriage or civil partnership certificate and lets a staff member verify it, with the verification captured in the case audit log. This article explains how to check and verify the status and how the record is retained.

Instructions

Check the uploaded certificate

  1. Open the patient's case in Fertility Consent.

  2. Locate the uploaded marriage / civil partnership certificate in the case documents.

  3. Open the certificate and confirm the names match the patient and partner on the case.

  4. Confirm the certificate is an original or a certified copy.

Note: Patients upload their own marriage or civil partnership certificate through the patient portal. If the certificate is missing, ask the patient to upload it before you proceed.

Verify and sign off the status

  1. Select the option to verify the marital status against the certificate.

  2. Record the status as married or civil partnership as evidenced.

  3. Confirm the sign-off so your name is captured against the verification.

Note: The verification is recorded in the case audit log, including the name of the staff member who confirmed the status, the date, and the certificate details. For married or civil partnership couples, the certificate information is exported with the ID document summary.

Warning: A marriage conducted overseas is generally recognised in the UK only if it was validly performed under the laws of the country where it took place. For overseas marriages, require an original or certified copy of the foreign certificate before verifying. See GOV.UK: Marriages and civil partnerships.

Expected Outcome

The patient's marital status shows as verified on the case, and the audit log records who confirmed it, the date, and the certificate details, providing the evidence required at an HFEA inspection.
